On April 29th, 2021 at 4:00 PM, the Rocco Galati Law Firm acting on behalf of 14 active & 5 retired police officers held a press conference announcing the filings of a Notice of Application with the Superior Court of Justice over the government’s overreach and their constitutionality.
Rocco stated that the measures are extremely vague, broad, and leave a large space for interpretation, “Police are not interpreting the regulations. They are listening to politicians and supervisors as they see it”. Examples were given with police using excessive force, beating up citizens, and even tasering kids at a skating rink.
"These regulations lead to a police state and martial law measures."
Rocco goes on to outline how the government’s measures breach the officer’s oath to the Constitution Act of 1867 and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, from randomized stops, checkpoints across provincial lines, entering & closing places of worship and people’s right to assemble, to name a few.
"..for police to remain steadfast adhering to their oath and when they are being asked to not, it creates turmoil internally"
Sgt. Julie Evans and Christopher Vandenbos were present, representing the other plaintiffs and answered some questions. When asked why they stepped forward to put their name and faces on the line, Evans expressed that at a very young age, having someone disabled in her family taught her to protect, advocate, and use assertive communication to make sure these people’s rights and freedoms are protected. Christopher’s family came from fleeing tyrannical government and this is all too familiar, as a father, he was leading by example for his children.
Rocco is hoping that by fall 2021, they can be in court arguing this. Until then, these cops are saying no to what they see as unlawful and unconstitutional.
