A new police unit in Manchester, UK, has already identified over 800 offenders of child sex grooming gangs. The Child Sexual Exploitation unit of 54 officers and staff will focus on large, complicated investigations and is currently operating three major inquiries into the historic abuse of young girls in Manchester and Rochdale. Across the police force, there are now 70 investigations involving victims of child sexual exploitation.

“We will take any opportunities to bring offenders to justice and, importantly, provide support for victims. Our door is continuously open,” Deputy Chief Constable Mabs Hussain said. “There are some horrendous things which happened to these girls which disgust me. That’s why we are so focused on making sure it gets the level of support it does.”

One case, Operation Green Jacket, involved a network of nearly 100 men in the abuse of scores of girls in takeout restaurants in Rusholme.

Overall, 468 victims have been discovered, and out of that, 332 have been identified. The police say that there are 540 of 809 offenders are known. There are also hundreds of additional cases where a single victim is involved.

One of the major investigations is Operation Exmoor, which involved the sexual abuse of children from 2008 and 2013. Many of the cases the CSE Unit are investigating occurred over a decade ago and only emerged years later — why do you think these predators have been undetected for so long?
