Mississippi Republican Governor Tate Reeves recently signed a bill preventing transgender athletes from competing in female sports teams. The bill, known as Senate Bill 2536, is set to become law on July 1, although legal action is possible before then. Mississippi is the first state in the US to enact a ban of this nature. Democratic President Joe Biden signed an executive order the day he took office on January 20, which bans any sort of discrimination based on gender identity in school sports and elsewhere. Conservative lawmakers are responding to the order by Biden, with more than 20 states proposing restrictions on athletics for transgender minors this year.
