The Ford government plans to give permission by March 19 to a developer to destroy a protected wetland in Pickering and build a new giant retail warehouse in its place.

The Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) will issue the permit to the developer group, Triple Group of Companies, “under duress” as the plan conflicts with its mandate to manage natural resources in Toronto region.

The warehouse will span up to four million square feet, making it twice the size of the biggest retail warehouse in Canada. The developer has not revealed the name of its client for the warehouse project, which it dubbed “Project Lonestar.” Amazon was reported to be one of the companies vying for location but decided to pull out on March 12, stating that it takes “environmental issues very seriously.”
