Former two-time Olympian gymnast Aly Raisman told CNN that she wants an independent investigation into USA Gymnastics.

The news came out after John Geddert, a former USA Olympics team coach, took his own life after being charged with 24 felonies for sexually abusing young gymnasts.

Geddert was close friends with Dr.Larry Nassar, who was sentenced to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing underage gymnasts for decades.

“As a minor on the National Team, I frequently had to travel (without my parents) under the supervision of USA Gymnastics. The “responsible” adults included John Geddert, Marvin Sharpe, Steve Penny, and Larry Nassar,” Raisman tweeted

Raisman also said that the adults she previously travelled with as a child were charged with criminal sexual conduct and racketeering, child molesting, destroying evidence, and sexual assault.

Raisman said she wants an independent investigation to be done and that there hasn’t been one. USA Gymnastics sent an email to CNN stating that there have been six investigations.

“To date, USA Gymnastics has participated in at least six independent investigations led by several congressional committees, the Indiana Attorney General, Walker County TX and independent law firm Ropes & Gray. USA Gymnastics has fully cooperated with all investigative bodies, including by producing information that they have requested and by supporting the release of the Office of Inspector General’s report of its investigation in the FBI. We are deeply committed to learning from these investigations and finding ways to prevent abuse in the future.”

Raisman said that there was an investigation she knew nothing about around Geddert by the USA Gymnastics and said that the committee awarded Geddert as the 2012 Olympic coach.

USA Gymnastics has been dealing with scandals about adults sexually abusing children several times. The abuse by these men dates back to decades of being able to escape with their predatory behaviour.

According to Los Angeles Times, Simone Biles and Aly Raisman were angry to find out about a proposal towards the 517 athletes who have sued USA Gymnastics.

The proposal would divide $215 million settlement between 517 victims in the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. This proposed settlement would have precluded any future lawsuits against the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee and other key figures.

In 2019, USA Today reported that USA Gymnastics had filed for bankruptcy in 2018 following lawsuits over sexual abuse of minors. It also lost all of its major sponsors.

The fact that these predators were able to create alliances for decades and sexually abuse hundreds of children without being caught earlier is a serious problem.
