As the European Union takes the lead on vaccine passports — proof of vaccination documents — Canada’s chief science adviser is set to release a report with recommendations in a few weeks on whether the country should follow suit. In some countries, such passports will be a travel prerequisite, much like mandatory negative COVID-19 test results before boarding a plane. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been ambivalent towards the vaccine passports, however, his administration is currently discussing its possible rollout with international partners and provinces and territories.
In the meantime, Conservative MP Derek Sloan of Hastings-Lennox & Addington has preemptively launched a petition against the advent of any such ‘vaxxport’ over concerns of violating rights and freedoms. “As if our liberties weren’t being trampled enough; the Trudeau government is now considering working with G7 nations towards instituting a vaccine passport,” the petition stated.
What are your thoughts on such documents, especially in abating the viral spread? Should the Canadian government observe the challenges of other nations before investing tax dollars into this infrastructure?
