A petition was launched just over three weeks ago on change.org, urging BC’s Minister of Education, Jennifer Whiteside, and the Provincial Health Officer, Bonnie Henry, to keep mandatory mask-wearing out of the province’s elementary schools.
The petition was launched by a user named Taylar Sherriff with the goal of reaching at least 1,500 signatures.
It provides a medical study from the World Health Organization (WHO) which states that student-to-student spread is rare. The petition urges the BC government to take a look at scientific data and studies and reconsider mandatory mask-wearing policy in its schools.
“The fear and panic to further restrict does not match the virus’s actual death toll,” the petition reads. “This virus has not proven to be as deadly as we all thought it to be in the beginning of 2020.”
Earlier this month, it became mandatory for secondary and high school students to wear masks in all indoor areas of the school.
With new variants of the COVID-19 virus posing a threat, the head of the teachers’ union in British Columbia, Teri Mooring, urged public-health officials to consider expanding mandatory mask-wearing in elementary schools as well.
