John Weaver, co-founder of the Lincoln Project, and a former strategist for Senator John McCain, has been accused of sexually harassing young men including an underaged boy. According to the journalist who broke the story, many people in the media knew about it and did nothing.

According to journalist Ryan Girdusky, who first broke the story for The American Conservative, editor-at-large of The Daily Beast, Molly Jong-Fast, and many others in Washington D.C., knew John Weaver was a sexual predator and a pedophile, but did nothing about it. The article unfolds a series of events revealing fully how Girdusky gained knowledge of Weaver’s predatory past.
GOP strategist, Arthur Schwarts, also tweeted that Molly Jong-Fast knew about allegations against Weaver, but did nothing. This statement supports the theory that people in power often refuse to expose predatory behaviour.

Girdusky also told Hill.TV that the accusations against Weaver were well known to many in Washington, D.C, before media outlets reported on them.

“According to several mutual friends, Molly Jong-Fast heard I had this story back in the  summer. And that it was circulating several outlets,” Girdusky tweeted.

After Girdusky’s article went public, 21 men came forward to share their stories about Weaver. According to their interviews, for years Weaver sent unsolicited and sexually provocative messages to young men suggesting he could help them get work in politics. Though only 21 men, including a 14-year-old boy have publicly accused Weaver, there could be others, The New York Time reported.

The men described Weaver as a man who preyed on them and used his power to get his way, however they never accused him of unlawful behaviour.

According to Girdusky, an anonymous source approached him on Twitter after noticing that Weaver was following Girdusky on the platform. He cautioned him about Weaver and later revealed that he was in contact with several young men who were solicited by Weaver for a job.

According to one of Weaver’s victims, who came forward to Girdusky’s original anonymous source, Weaver propositioned the young man with sex in exchange for a job. The source provided text messages exchanged between them and Weaver. Girdusky wrote in the aritcle that the young man and Weaver apparently had consensual sex in a hotel room but Weaver never made good on the job offer.

The New York Times said that the leaders of the Lincoln Project had no idea about allegations against Weaver until The American Conservative first released the article in January 2021.

Steve Schmidt, another co-founder of the group, said the rest of the leaders had learned last summer from social media posts that Mr.Weaver might be involved in relationships with men.

“There was no awareness or insinuations of any type of inappropriate behaviour when we became aware of the chatter at the time. Mr.Weaver denied the claims,” said Schmidt in an interview in the New York Times.

“The truth is that I’m gay. And that I have a wife and two kids, who I love. My inability to reconcile those two truths has led to this agonizing place. To the men I made uncomfortable through my messages that I viewed as consensual mutual conversations at the time: I am truly sorry. They were inappropriate and it was because of my failings that this discomfort was brought to you,” said Weaver, The Guardian reported,

The Lincoln Project denied knowing anything and condemned Weaver’s actions.

“John Weaver led a secret life that was built on a foundation of deception at every level. He is a predator, a liar, and an abuser. We extend our deepest sympathies to those who were targeted by his deplorable and predatory behaviour,”  the project said in a statement in the Guardian.
